Yet for communications technologies it works in reverse. Since our (primitive) radio waves are spreading out at the speed of light they can never be overtaken. Any extraterrestrial listening will encounter them long before they hear our more advanced technology. And better communications also become more efficient, leaving less waste to be picked up by others. Laser based communications, for example, may be almost impossible for an extraterrestrial to pick up accidentally.
