We can’t directly observe the big bang because light itself didn’t really exist at that time, meaning there’s nothing that we can detect. To understand what happened scientists apply the known laws of physics, but in the very first moments of the Big Bang the Universe would have been both extremely small and extremely heavy (similar to a black hole) so that quantum gravity would have dominated. Since we don’t yet have a theory of quantum gravity we can’t say what would have happened then.
