The bird was actually named after the country. In Turkish it is called "hindi" which means India (Hindistan in Turkish)! This seems to be because nobody knew where the turkey actually came from. In England they thought it was from Turkey, in Turkey from India. In many other languages the bird is also named after a country, but which one varies wildly!
