I've come to pretty much the same conclusion. Building a following on Medium took a long time, but seems to have been rather pointless. There was a brief period when it did seem to matter, but recently either all my followers left or Medium stopped showing them my writing - which leaves writing here a bit pointless. I've also switched mostly to substack, though its tough to get new subscribers there.
