I fully agree that there needs to be a separation between writing and editing. Preferably that separation should be as long as possible, though it is hard when you have pressure to publish. But I also think knowing the rules of grammar and writing is vital. Once you know and understand the rules, and you can write a piece that passes any grammar check with your eyes closed, then you are ready to start breaking the rules for style.
